EAM S. Jaishankar Visits Brussels to Advance India–EU Strategic Engagement

India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, undertook an official visit to Brussels on 15–16 March 2026 to engage with leaders and institutions of the European Union. The visit forms part of ongoing diplomatic engagement between India and the EU aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and facilitating dialogue on regional and global developments, reflecting the continued importance of India–EU Strategic Engagement.
According to an official press release issued by the Ministry of External Affairs on its website, the visit took place at the invitation of the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The engagements in Brussels were intended to advance India–EU relations and support regular consultations on issues of mutual interest.

Engagements with European Union Leadership
During the visit, Dr Jaishankar held discussions with senior officials of the European Union, including the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. The meetings provided an opportunity to review the progress of the India–EU strategic partnership and exchange perspectives on international developments.
The discussions addressed areas of cooperation across political, economic and strategic domains. Both sides reviewed ongoing initiatives and mechanisms that support engagement between India and the European Union.
Participation in the EU Foreign Affairs Council
A key component of the visit was Dr Jaishankar’s participation in discussions with European Union foreign ministers during the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels. The engagement allowed ministers to exchange views on India–EU relations as well as on wider regional and global issues. The interaction formed part of the European Union’s consultation process with partner countries and reflected the importance placed on India as a strategic partner.
Strengthening India–EU Dialogue
The visit highlighted the continued institutional engagement between India and the European Union through structured dialogues and ministerial consultations. Such interactions contribute to strengthening cooperation across sectors and maintaining regular exchanges on global developments.
India and the European Union maintain a broad-based partnership encompassing political dialogue, economic cooperation and collaboration on international issues. The Brussels visit served as another step in advancing these engagements through direct consultations between senior leadership.
