6G
Experience the next wireless frontier with 6G, a revolutionary standard that will unify international digital ecosystems through seamless hyper-connectivity and ultra-high-speed global data transmission.

Imagine a future where your everyday devices talk to each other instantly, adapting to what you need without a single glitch. That is the promise of 6G. To make this vision a reality, the European Union is investing a massive €22 million to turn early telecommunications research into real-world industrial tools.

A part of this funding focuses on building a dedicated technology bridge between Europe and India to create a highly secure, globally connected digital network.

From Lab To Real Life

The European Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU), a European public-private partnership supporting research and innovation in next-generation smart networks and services, has announced five different research projects to receive this funding.

The main goal is to take theoretical ideas out of academic laboratories and put them into large-scale testing and practical use. While basic science is great, moving those discoveries into the commercial market takes serious financial backing. The chosen projects focus on critical needs, like building artificial intelligence-ready data systems and large experimentation platforms.

Building A Tech Bridge

The centrepiece of this cross-border teamwork is the newly announced EU-INDIA-6G-BRIDGE project. Acting as a central coordination hub, this effort connects researchers, tech companies, standardisation groups, and policymakers from both Europe and India.

By bringing these different groups together, the project hopes to create shared technology roadmaps and provide vital ecosystem intelligence. This will help engineers in Europe and India work together to develop AI-powered 6G networks that meet the needs of both regions.

Setting Global Standards Together

Building a completely new generation of mobile networks requires international agreement on how everything will connect across borders. The new coordination hub focuses on strengthening the links between early research and global standardisation. This teamwork builds on the solid foundation already created by the India-EU Trade and Technology Council.

Co-chaired by key leaders like India's External Affairs Minister, Dr S. Jaishankar, and India's Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, this council gives both sides a high-level platform to tackle challenges in trusted technology. Under their guidance, both regions have heavily pushed for secure telecommunications supply chains.

Helping Small Businesses Thrive

A major goal of this collaborative bridge is to get small and medium-sized enterprises deeply involved. Usually, the global telecommunications industry is dominated by just a few massive multinational corporations. However, this cross-border initiative actively encourages smaller, flexible tech companies to jump into the research and development phase.

By bringing these smaller businesses into the standardisation process, the partnership ensures a much more diverse and competitive supply chain. These innovative companies will get access to cross-border partnerships and policy resources they would struggle to find on their own.

Focus On Digital Security

Security, privacy and resilience are important considerations in the development of future digital infrastructure. The SNS JU identifies these as foundational features for the technologies and architectures supported by the five selected proposals.

EU-INDIA-6G-BRIDGE will contribute to longer-term cooperation between Europe and India on secure, trusted and resilient technologies. Its planned work on research coordination, roadmaps and standardisation links is intended to support cooperation as both regions prepare for the next generation of mobile networks.

Five Projects, One Broader 6G Push

EU-INDIA-6G-BRIDGE is one of five proposals receiving funding under the €22 million programme. The other four projects address complementary areas of Europe's 6G research and innovation agenda:

  • 6G-AID will develop a European data foundation for AI-powered 6G networks, including curated datasets and an open-source simulator for generating synthetic data.

  • HEMES-6G will establish a large-scale European experimentation environment connecting eight testbed sites across six EU countries to support testing of different network technologies.

  • EUNICON-6G will examine Europe's position in connected-device value chains and develop recommendations to strengthen its role in future 6G device ecosystems.

  • SNS IMPACT will coordinate activities across projects, support stakeholder engagement and help ensure that research results contribute to standardisation and European policy development.

Together with EU-INDIA-6G-BRIDGE, these projects are intended to move research closer to practical applications and strengthen cooperation across the wider 6G ecosystem.

The five proposals were announced at Techritory 2026 in Riga, Latvia, on 22 October 2026. According to Erzsébet Fitori, Executive Director of the SNS JU, the projects will give European industry better access to the data, testing facilities, technologies and partnerships needed to turn 6G research into products and services. For India and Europe, the EU-INDIA-6G-BRIDGE initiative provides a dedicated platform for cooperation as both regions work towards the next generation of secure, interoperable and resilient telecommunications.
