Spain's Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, visited India on January 21, 2026, at the invitation of External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. The visit marks a significant diplomatic engagement between the two nations as they commemorate seven decades of established diplomatic relations. During his tenure in the country, Minister Albares called on the Hon'ble President of India, underscoring the high-level diplomatic visits importance accorded to bilateral relations.

Bilateral Engagement and Strategic Discussions

The cornerstone of Minister Albares' visit centered on comprehensive delegation-level talks between External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and the Spanish Foreign Minister.


The discussions encompassed the complete spectrum of India-Spain relations, including trade and investment frameworks, defense and security cooperation, cultural exchanges, tourism development, and strengthened people-to-people ties.


Commemorating Seven Decades of Relations

A landmark moment during the visit was the joint launch of the logo for the India-Spain Dual Year of Culture, Tourism and Artificial Intelligence. This celebration marks 2026 as a commemorative year recognizing 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, reflecting their commitment to deepening multifaceted engagement.


Regional Cooperation and Shared Priorities

The Ministers discussed avenues to strengthen bilateral trade and investment, with particular focus on technology, renewable energy, defence industrial collaboration, urban infrastructure, and railways sectors. Beyond bilateral matters, they examined recent developments in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region, exchanging perspectives on issues of mutual concern.

Both nations reiterated their steadfast opposition to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, emphasizing the necessity for enhanced international cooperation in counterterrorism efforts.

In a noteworthy development, Minister Albares formally handed over Spain's declaration of accession to the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, signifying Spain's commitment to regional maritime cooperation and India-led regional frameworks.
