Aligning Frameworks for a Greener Future

The Coffee Board of India is currently urging local growers to register on the India Coffee App. This is to align India's agricultural exports with the new European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). By moving to a centralised digital registry, the initiative helps in keeping bilateral trade flow smooth. It also demonstrates a strong commitment to shared global environmental goals and climate action.

The Importance of the European Market

The European Union continues to be the top destination for Indian coffee, acting as a major importer and re-exporter of green, roasted, and instant varieties. The depth of this trade relationship was a key focus during a recent stakeholder conference organised by the Coffee Board in Kudumangalore, near Kushalnagar.

During the gathering, Coffee Board Chairman MJ Dinesh noted that 45 percent of India's total coffee production makes its way to the European market. It was also noted that the demand is highly concentrated in certain areas, with 16 percent of all exports bound straight for Italy. Coffee Board Secretary and Chief Executive Officer Kurma Rao mentioned these figures which were later shared on the official X handle, @CoffeeboardI.

Adapting to New Environmental Standards

The EUDR is a comprehensive environmental initiative backed by 29 European coffee-growing nations. Its primary goal is to tackle global warming by ensuring complete transparency in the supply chain. Based on its rules, European buyers must show solid proof that their imported coffee comes from land free of deforestation since 31 December 2020.

India finds itself in a highly favourable position regarding these new requirements. Currently, the nation falls under the EUDR low-risk category for deforestation. Because of this classification, only one percent of Indian coffee exports will need to pass through rigorous global quality checks. This low-risk status will help streamline customs processes at European borders and keep the supply chain moving efficiently.

Protecting Grower Incomes and Data

Relying on a state-backed digital platform offers clear financial and security advantages for the Indian farming community. To meet European traceability standards, growers can use the India Coffee App to submit their land records directly to the authorities.

Chairman MJ Dinesh highlighted the value of this approach. He confirmed, “By providing this platform natively, the Coffee Board helps growers bypass private third-party services that charge up to 35 dollars per tonne of exported coffee. Using a government-backed app also protects national agricultural data and security”. This helps farmers protect their hard-earned revenue while safely meeting strict European data parameters.

A Blueprint for Global Collaboration

To ensure everyone is ready for these changes, the Coffee Board is working closely with industry stakeholders. For example, Deputy Director of Research Dr Pradeep Babu recently led an interactive lecture to walk local growers through the new compliance steps.

Through these collaborative educational efforts, India and the European Union are actively strengthening their shared economic and diplomatic ties. The successful rollout of this digital registry offers a highly practical model for transparent, climate-friendly global trade.
