India and the European Union are moving to translate their recently concluded free trade agreement (FTA) and wider trade‑technology understandings into implementation, following the 16th India–EU Summit in New Delhi on 27 January 2026. With the EU already India’s largest trading partner, accounting for €120 billion in goods trade in 2024, both sides have outlined a dense schedule of engagements through 2026 to fast‑track agreed economic and digital initiatives.

Core trade outcomes from the summit

At the New Delhi summit, leaders announced the successful conclusion of negotiations on the India–EU FTA and committed to its full and timely implementation as a central element of the new Joint Comprehensive Strategic Agenda. They also tasked negotiators to conclude, at the earliest, a parallel Investment Protection Agreement and a Geographical Indications Agreement to strengthen the overall trade and investment framework.

Role of the Trade and Technology Council

The joint statement reaffirmed the Trade and Technology Council (TTC) as the cornerstone of India–EU technology co‑operation, covering digital rules, secure connectivity, critical and emerging technologies, and resilient value chains. It also fixed Brussels in 2026 for the next ministerial‑level TTC meeting, intended to review progress and deliver concrete outcomes under each TTC working group.

Brussels diplomacy to operationalise implementation of the FTA commitments

To operationalise summit decisions, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar’s 15–16 March visit to Brussels focused on early signing of the FTA and on “unlocking the full potential” of the agreement, as reflected in the official readout. During the visit, he briefed the EU Foreign Affairs Council and held bilateral meetings with EU leaders on practical steps to implement the FTA and deepen co‑operation across trade, connectivity, green transition and security.

New agreements and structured follow‑up

In parallel, India and the EU have launched negotiations on an India–EU Security of Information Agreement to facilitate closer collaboration in sensitive areas while protecting classified information. Leaders have also agreed that the next TTC ministerial will take place in Brussels in 2026, alongside enhanced business‑to‑business engagement, sectoral dialogues and parliamentary exchanges, to keep the trade and technology agenda on a steady, implementation‑focused track.
