India's Traditional Palmyra Jaggery Powder Enters Bulgarian Market Reaching European Consumers

For the first time, buyers in Europe will be getting the taste of a unique Indian sweetener. India has just sent its very first shipment of organic Palmyra jaggery powder to Bulgaria. This overseas export was made possible by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), a trade promotion body operating under India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The initial shipment of 1.755 metric tonnes is a massive step for regional Indian farmers hoping to sell their authentic agricultural goods overseas. It shows exactly how local growers can connect directly with international buyers when given the right governmental support.
Sharing Traditional Flavours With Europe
This milestone export highlights a real demand for natural, traditional foods abroad. A company named Wellbeing Foods, located in Erode, manufactured and exported the powder by teaming up with Chennai-based Chetty Exports Private Limited.
The organic sweetener is now making its way to Varna, a major port city situated on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. A Bulgarian business called Sow Life Ltd is handling the importing side, helping to put this unique Indian product on European shelves. Shipped by sea through the Chennai Port, the whole process aims to build a clean, transparent supply chain that benefits everyone involved from farm to table.
Growing Heritage Sweeteners For Export
Palmyra jaggery powder is a highly respected traditional sweetener that forms a large part of the cultural and farming history in Tamil Nadu, a state in southern India. The botanical name for the specific palm tree that provides the nectar is Borassus flabellifer.
Collecting this nectar requires deep, traditional knowledge that has been passed down through local families for generations. To keep up with this new international demand without harming the local ecosystem, farmers are carefully managing 137 acres dedicated entirely to organic cultivation. This careful farming ensures the agricultural land stays healthy for years to come.
Offering Healthier Choices For Buyers
Unlike regular white sugar that goes through heavy factory processing, this natural powder holds onto its vital nutrients, bringing essential vitamins and minerals to the consumer. As shoppers all over the world look for healthier things to eat, this unrefined sweetener is drawing serious attention from health-conscious European buyers.
The traditional way the nectar is collected means its natural goodness stays right there in the final product. By bringing this wholesome alternative to Bulgaria, Indian producers are stepping right into the massive European market for organic, natural foods.
Passing Strict European Quality Rules
Selling food in Europe means following some of the strictest quality rules in the world. To make sure the product was accepted smoothly, the entire production process had to be completely flawless.
The exported Palmyra jaggery powder carries full certification under India's National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) and also holds the strict European Union organic certification.
Because India's NPOP rules are officially recognised as matching European standards, Indian exporters can avoid getting re-certified overseas. This double stamp of approval proves to overseas buyers that the powder is completely organic and grown without any synthetic chemicals.
Earning More For Local Farmers
Beyond the pride of seeing local food on international shelves, this project brings real money back to the rural farming communities. Selling certified organic food overseas usually means earning a better price, and the farmers growing these Palmyra palms are seeing the financial benefits directly.
Thanks to this export project, local farmers are earning prices about fifteen to twenty-two percent higher than what they would make selling locally in India. The product manufacturers are also seeing their earnings jump by seventeen percent compared to domestic sales. Making more money helps these rural families build better lives while giving them a great reason to keep farming organically.
To mark this achievement, an official flag-off ceremony took place to send the goods on their way. APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev led the event, joined by APEDA Secretary Dr. Saswati Bose, various trade partners, and the local farmers who made it happen. The historic shipment officially departed on October 15, 2026, from Gobichettipalayam in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu, India.
