The first half of 2026 may well be remembered as a defining period in the evolution of European Union (EU) India relations. While much of the public discussion has centred on the proposed India EU Free Trade Agreement, this edition of The Europe India Journal argues that something far more significant is taking shape. The relationship is evolving from one primarily defined by market access to one built on strategic economic corridors, resilient supply chains, innovation ecosystems, and shared geopolitical interests.

Across this edition, our contributors explore this transformation from multiple perspectives. From fintech and advanced manufacturing to maritime logistics, hydrogen infrastructure, and regional industrial clusters, the message is consistent: the future of EU India cooperation will be driven not only by governments, but also by cities, regions, businesses, universities, and innovators working together.

One of the defining themes emerging from this edition is the importance of looking beyond capitals. Europe's engagement with India cannot be understood solely through Brussels, just as India's engagement with Europe extends well beyond the institutions of the European Union. Munich, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Toulouse, Milan, Barcelona and many other regional economic centres have become integral to India's global value chains. Equally, India's diverse states offer distinct opportunities that require a deeper understanding of regional strengths, industrial capabilities, and investment priorities.

We are also honoured to feature the perspectives of policymakers, including 3 Members of European Parliament in this edition. Trade agreements create economic opportunity, but enduring partnerships are built on trust, shared democratic values, and stronger people-to-people connections.

This edition reflects another important reality: economic diplomacy and geopolitics are increasingly intertwined. Supply chain resilience, energy transition, digital innovation, critical technologies, and maritime connectivity are no longer isolated policy domains; they have become central pillars of strategic cooperation between Europe and India.
