Bridging Bratislava and New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Modi’s Landmark Visit Elevates India-Slovakia Ties to a Comprehensive Partnership

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a historic state visit to the Slovak Republic on 14–15 June 2026, marking the first time an Indian head of government has visited the nation since its independence in 1993. The visit fundamentally reshaped bilateral relations by elevating ties to a Comprehensive Partnership, reflecting a mutual commitment to deeper strategic, economic, and technological integration. Over the two-day visit, Prime Minister Modi held high-profile discussions with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and President Peter Pellegrini, oversaw the signing of eleven major agreements, engaged with top corporate executives, and received "The Order of the White Double Cross, First Class," the highest state honour of the Slovak Republic.   

Elevation of Bilateral Relations at Bratislava Castle

The core of the diplomatic mission commenced on 15 June 2026 at the historic Bratislava Castle, where Prime Minister Robert Fico warmly received Prime Minister Modi with a formal ceremonial welcome. The leaders held extensive talks in both tête-à-tête and delegation-level formats, focusing on key operational areas such as space exploration, civil nuclear energy, renewable power, and digital innovation.

A pivotal element of these discussions was the formal transition of their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership, intended to strengthen legislative interactions and promote sustained political dialogue at all levels. Security cooperation occupied a central role, with Prime Minister Modi expressing profound appreciation for Slovakia's steadfast support and solidarity extended to India following the Pahalgam terrorist attack of April 2025.

In response, both nations agreed to strengthen their counter-terrorism cooperation through the establishment of a Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism, alongside instituting a regular Consular Dialogue to facilitate smoother talent mobility. Additionally, the two leaders laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Bratislava to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers pivotal in Slovakia's World War II liberation.

The elevation to a Comprehensive Partnership was supported by the exchange of several key MoUs and agreements detailing specific technical and academic goals. A central economic event was an interactive round-table meeting co-chaired by Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Robert Fico, which brought together prominent Slovak business and industry leaders across multiple technical domains. Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s structural reforms aimed at achieving the "Viksit Bharat" trajectory, specifically detailing policies designed to foster a transparent, stable, and investor-friendly commercial landscape.

Slovak industry leaders welcomed these reforms and expressed strong interest in expanding their investment footprint in India through technology partnerships and joint ventures, particularly in light of the newly concluded India-EU Free Trade Agreement. The roundtable included executives from Slovak industries, including Mr Alexej Baljajev and Mr Peter Malec of Tatravagonka (railways), Mr Robert Spisak of the AZC Group, Mr Richard Marko and Mr Parvinder Walia of ESET (cyber security), Mr Jaroslav Kuracina of Grand Power Ltd (defence), Mr Peter Lednicky of Penta Hospitals International (healthcare), and Mr Stefan Rosina of Matador (automotive).   

Ceremonial Tributes, Cultural Exchanges, and Highest State Honours

Following his discussions with Prime Minister Fico, Prime Minister Modi proceeded to the Presidential Palace in Bratislava to meet with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini. Prime Minister Modi fondly recalled their previous meeting on the sidelines of the India–AI Impact Summit in February 2026, and both leaders expressed satisfaction with the positive trajectory of trade, investment, and technology cooperation.

The presidential meeting was marked by a series of cultural engagements. The two leaders viewed an exclusive painting exhibition created by Slovak artists dedicated to the theme of "Varanasi City". This was accompanied by a special Yoga demonstration performed by local Slovak school children in the Presidential Garden, which the leaders watched together.

In a special state ceremony, President Pellegrini conferred Slovakia's highest state decoration, "The Order of the White Double Cross, First Class," upon Prime Minister Modi in recognition of his role and exceptional contribution to the bilateral partnership. In his acceptance speech, Prime Minister Modi expressed heartfelt gratitude, dedicating the honour to the 1.4 billion people of India and the enduring bonds of friendship. The visit concluded with a formal banquet dinner hosted in honour of the Indian delegation at the palace.   

Strategic Multilateralism and Geopolitical Convergence

The broader strategic dimensions of the state visit were articulated in a Joint Statement published on 15 June 2026. The two nations reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive reforms within global governance institutions, specifically the United Nations Security Council. In this context, Slovakia reiterated its support for India's permanent membership in an expanded UN Security Council.

Furthermore, Slovakia reaffirmed its constructive approach to India's membership in the Nuclear Suppliers Group. On regional platforms, the leaders agreed to enhance connectivity and infrastructure projects by supporting cooperation with Central European groupings, including the Slavkov 3, Visegrad 4, and the 3 Seas Initiative.

The Joint Statement also highlighted a shared commitment to a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific under the framework of international law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. This strategic alignment is built upon historical cooperation, such as Slovakia’s key assistance during the evacuation of Indian nationals from Ukraine under Operation Ganga in 2022.
