In a pivotal moment for transcontinental diplomacy, Inida's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar delivered a landmark address at Finland's Kultaranta Talks on 11 June 2026, underscoring India's energy security, supply chain resilience, and deepening strategic cooperation with the European Union. The discussion, centred on "Emerging Powers and the New Geopolitical Competition," marked a significant intensification in India-EU ties, with three major agreements concluded this year alone.

A Partnership Gaining Momentum

Jaishankar emphasised that the India-EU relationship has "gained significant momentum this year," citing three concrete milestones that demonstrate the growing depth of collaboration. He noted:

  • India and the EU concluded negotiations on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA)

  • The Strategic & Defence Partnership was signed

  • The Comprehensive Mobility Cooperation Framework was established

These developments reflect a strategic partnership that transcends traditional diplomatic boundaries, anchoring itself in economic security and shared technological values.

Energy Security: National Interest Over Political Alignment

At the heart of Jaishankar's address was India's approach to energy security, which he articulated with clarity and diplomatic precision. He stated that India's oil procurement decisions are driven by "cost and availability" rather than political considerations.

Jaishankar explained that market dynamics and supply realignments—particularly Europe's increased demand for Middle Eastern crude—influenced India's strategic pivot towards Russian oil supplies. He emphasised that these choices were shaped by "prevailing circumstances in the global energy market" rather than political alignment.

In a direct response to European criticism, he asserted that "Indians have never done anything to endanger Europe," reminding audiences that energy decisions are guided by affordability, availability, and security. He also highlighted the inconsistency in US policy, which had previously imposed tariffs on India for purchasing Russian oil before later lifting sanctions.

Supply Chain Resilience in a Multipolar World

Jaishankar underscored the global impact of ongoing conflicts and called for urgent supply chain diversification to combat economic security risks. He highlighted the need for resilient supply chains as a cornerstone of economic security, particularly in protecting sensitive technologies from research security threats.

The character of warfare, he observed, is evolving rapidly with new technologies, weapons, and tactics coexisting alongside traditional conflict forms. This evolution opens fresh avenues for India-EU defence and strategic cooperation.

The Kultaranta Talks are Finland’s premier annual foreign and security policy forum, hosted by the President of Finland at the presidential summer residence, Kultaranta, in Naantali. The event brings together heads of state, ministers, diplomats, academics, business leaders, and policy experts from around the world to discuss pressing geopolitical and security challenges. Over the years, the Kultaranta Talks have evolved into an influential platform for strategic dialogue, making External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s participation and address particularly significant in the context of India’s growing engagement with Europe and the wider international community.

Deepening India-EU Strategic Cooperation

Beyond energy and supply chains, Jaishankar highlighted the centrality of India's relations with the Gulf region, underpinned by strong people-to-people ties, energy cooperation, and growing strategic partnership. He noted that both India and the EU possess complementary strengths in the technology domain, with both sides increasing collaboration across the entire value chain.

The leaders committed to accelerated cooperation in clean transition and energy resilience under the EU-India Clean Energy and Climate Partnership, focusing on renewable energy, hydrogen, energy efficiency, and smart grids.

India's Role in Global Stability

Participating alongside Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen and UAE Assistant Foreign Minister Lana Nusseibeh, Jaishankar addressed India's contribution to global stability in an evolving multipolar world. His remarks emphasised India's role in international cooperation while discussing key issues affecting Europe and the Indo-Pacific region.

The Kultaranta Talks, organised by Finnish President Alexander Stubb under the theme "A World in Transition: Global, Regional and Local Perspectives," provided the platform for these significant diplomatic exchanges. This 14th edition of the talks has become a crucial forum for examining emerging geopolitical dynamics between India and European nations.

Through measured diplomacy and factual clarity, Jaishankar's address has strengthened the foundation for a contemporary, forward-looking partnership between India and the European Union.
