Germany’s Isar Aerospace Launches First Commercial Rocket Into Orbit

It was a big night for the European space sector. On September 5, 2026, Munich-based Isar Aerospace successfully launched multiple commercial satellites into Low Earth Orbit. Lifting off at 22:12 Central European Summer Time from the Andøya Spaceport in Arctic Norway, the company's Spectrum rocket made a flawless ascent.

The mission, named "Onward and Upward," is a huge achievement.


It marks the very first time a privately developed rocket has reached orbit from continental European soil. By safely delivering five micro-satellites alongside a technology experiment, the German startup proved that Europe is growing its independent ability to send payloads into space.


The Spectrum Rocket

The machine behind this milestone is the Spectrum rocket. It is a two-stage launch vehicle that stands 28 metres tall and measures two metres across. Designed to serve the fast-growing market for small and medium satellites, the rocket runs on a highly efficient mix of liquid oxygen and propane.


The rocket's first stage relies on nine internally developed Aquila engines to push it out of the lower atmosphere. Each engine generates roughly 75 kilonewtons of thrust at sea level.


The second stage uses a single Aquila engine tailored for the vacuum of space, which features a special multi-ignition system. This means the engine can reignite in space to drop payloads right into their target orbits, without needing an extra kick stage.


Reaching Space

During the flight, the Spectrum rocket hit all its marks. It passed the point of maximum aerodynamic pressure, cut off its main engines, and separated its stages exactly on time. After crossing the 100-kilometre Kármán line—the widely agreed-upon edge of space—the vehicle dropped its payload fairing.


Once it stabilised its path, the rocket successfully released a cluster of CubeSats. These small payloads included educational satellites from the Technical University of Berlin, the University of Maribor, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and the Technical University of Vienna. The German Space Agency, part of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), selected these specific payloads through its Microlauncher Competition to help foster academic space research.


Bouncing Back from 2025

This success comes after a period of hard work for Isar Aerospace, a company founded in 2018 by researchers from the Technical University of Munich. The team faced a tough setback in March 2025 when their first test flight failed about 30 seconds after liftoff due to a vent valve issue.


Seventeen months later, this second flight has given the company the operational data it needs to move from research and development into full-scale manufacturing. This real-world flight data is essential for making future rockets even more reliable for commercial customers.


Expanding Production

With strong backing from investors, Isar Aerospace is now speeding up its production. After securing a €270 million Series D funding round in June 2026, the company's total financial backing sits at roughly €870 million.

The firm is currently working out of a new 40,000-square-metre manufacturing site near Munich, Germany. Isar Aerospace has already started building its next five Spectrum rockets. Eventually, the massive plant is designed to roll out up to 40 rockets every year to keep up with global demand.


What This Means for Europe

The successful flight is great news for European space agencies that want to ensure the region has its own autonomous path to space. The European Space Agency (ESA) has heavily supported Isar Aerospace through its Boost! programme, which helps fund commercial space transportation. In addition, this launch hits a major milestone for the European Launcher Challenge, securing the company a €197.8 million contract aimed at growing regional launch providers.


Daniel Metzler, the Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Isar Aerospace, summed up the event. "Europe now has sovereign access to space. We have entered into a new chapter for European spaceflight," Metzler stated. He added that the team is incredibly proud and will now focus on scaling up production to deliver on their orders.

Leadership at the European Space Agency felt the same way. Josef Aschbacher, the Director General of the ESA, called it a historic launch and noted it is a major step toward a more diverse and independent European launch sector. Géraldine Naja, the ESA's Director of Space Transportation, also praised the achievement, noting that Isar Aerospace is the first European company to reach orbit with its own launch vehicle.
