India and Austria have advanced their bilateral ties through key outcomes from Federal Chancellor Dr. Christian Stocker's official visit to India from 14-17 April 2026, emphasising enhanced cooperation in defence, cybersecurity, and mobility sectors.

The visit, the first by an Austrian Chancellor in over four decades, resulted in six signed MoUs, agreements, and Letters of Intent (LoIs), alongside several announcements to deepen partnerships.

These details are drawn from the official Transcript of the Special Briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on 16 April 2026 and the List of Outcomes published on the MEA website.

Defence Cooperation Advances

A Letter of Intent on Cooperation in Military Matters establishes an institutional framework for defence industrial and technology partnerships.

This builds on the India-EU Defence and Security Partnership signed on 27 January 2026, covering policy dialogue, training, and capacity building.

Further, a partnership forms between India’s Centre for UN Peacekeeping and Austria’s Armed Forces International Centre (AUTINT).

Cybersecurity Dialogue Launched

Both sides announced the launch of an Institutional Cybersecurity Dialogue to strengthen collaboration in this vital domain. This initiative complements ongoing IT sector ties and supports high-technology cooperation as a central pillar of the enhanced India-Austria partnership.

Mobility and Skills Enhancement

Operationalisation of the Working Holiday Programme advances people-to-people ties, allowing up to 200 visas per year for those aged 18-30 for up to one year of stay, focused on training and cultural exchange.

A Joint Letter of Intent on dual vocational training, skills development, and recognition of vocational qualifications promotes exchanges and knowledge sharing.

Discussions under the 2023 Comprehensive Migration and Mobility Partnership reviewed sub-groups on healthcare, personnel, vocational education, and innovation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Stocker reviewed these areas during wide-ranging talks, underscoring shared priorities in trade, technology, and talent.

Bilateral trade stands at around 3.5 billion USD, with expectations of growth post-India-EU Free Trade Agreement implementation.
