India Hosts Austria's Federal Chancellor, H.E. Dr Christian Stocker, who will pay an official visit from 14–17 April 2026 at the invitation of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, marking his first visit to India and his first official visit to Asia.

He will be accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes Federal Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Dr Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, senior officials and business leaders. India Hosts Austria's Federal Chancellor as announced in the official press release issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India, on its website (mea.gov.in). The MEA note underlines the formal, official nature of the programme and frames the visit as part of the ongoing engagement between India and Austria.

High-level engagements in New Delhi

During the visit, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker will hold discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation across a wide range of areas.

Prime Minister Modi will also host a lunch in honour of the visiting dignitary, underlining the importance attached by India to the Austrian Chancellor’s first visit to the country.

In addition to talks with the Prime Minister, Chancellor Stocker will call on the Hon’ble President Smt Droupadi Murmu during his stay in India.

External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar will also call on the Federal Chancellor, providing further opportunity for a structured exchange on bilateral and international issues.

Focus on bilateral, regional and global issues

The discussions between the Prime Minister and the Federal Chancellor will cover ways to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors of mutual interest. Both sides are expected, as per the MEA press release, to exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual concern, including cooperation in multilateral fora.

The visit provides an occasion to take stock of the existing partnership and to explore possibilities for expanding engagement in new and emerging areas. The presence of senior officials and business leaders in the Austrian delegation reflects the multi-dimensional character of the relationship.

Context of India–Austria relations

India and Austria are described by the MEA as sharing “warm, friendly and multi-faceted” ties, rooted in shared democratic values.

The official note recalls that the “highly successful” visit of Prime Minister Modi to Austria in July 2024 substantially elevated contemporary relations between the two countries.

This growing engagement is also reflected in discussions across Europe. In a recent contribution to this publication, Member of the European Parliament from Austria, Ms. Anna Stürgkh, highlighted the evolving economic relationship in her article titled “From Austrian wine in Delhi to Indian blankets in Europe.” Here, she highlights how everyday examples—such as Austrian wine in Delhi and Indian blankets in Europe—illustrate the growing and visible economic links between India and Austria.

Against this backdrop, the visit of Federal Chancellor Stocker is presented as reflecting the shared commitment of both sides to further deepen and expand their partnership in new areas of mutual interest.

It is positioned as a continuation of the positive momentum generated by recent high-level exchanges and as an opportunity to reinforce cooperation at the bilateral, regional and multilateral levels.
