On 1 September 2026, India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met with Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commissioner for Economy, in Asheville, United States. The meeting took place alongside the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors gathering.
Their talks focused on growing the economic relationship between two major global markets. Together, they laid out plans for future trade, shared technology, and safer supply chains, setting a cooperative path for the India-EU Economic and Financial Partnership.
Pushing for Free Trade
A big part of their conversation looked at how the two regions currently work together, particularly through the India-EU macroeconomic dialogue and the Trade and Technology Council. These groups help line up the rules and economic goals of both sides.
During the meeting, both leaders confirmed they want to keep moving forward with the India-EU Free Trade Agreement and the Investment Protection Agreement. By advancing these deals, India and the European Union hope to open up new markets, cut down on trade hurdles, and encourage investments across borders.

Building Stronger Supply Chains
With industries worldwide shifting toward green energy and high-tech manufacturing, having reliable supply chains is more important than ever. Sitharaman and Dombrovskis shared ideas on how to build supply networks that are diverse and secure, putting a spotlight on critical raw materials and new technologies.
India’s Finance Minister made a clear point about managing these resources. She stressed that the partnership needs to go beyond just mining and buying critical minerals. Instead, she pushed for building local processing plants and adding value to these materials at home. This strategy aims to help both India and the EU create strong industries that can survive sudden global shortages.
Teaming Up on Digital Tech
The Asheville meeting also highlighted the growing digital world. The financial leaders looked into new ways to work together in fast-moving tech sectors, specifically zooming in on FinTech, artificial intelligence, and generative AI. Recognising the burst of innovation in both regions, they want to connect Indian and European start-ups more closely.
By matching India's energetic tech entrepreneurs with Europe's solid digital rules and funding, both sides are looking to create tech solutions that are safe, clear, and ready for the global stage.
Expanding Financial Ties
Engaging with the European Union is just one part of India's larger effort to strengthen its economic role at the G20 summit. While in Asheville, India’s Finance Minister also took the chance to hold side meetings to boost international financial teamwork.
Most notably, Sitharaman sat down with South Korean Deputy Prime Minister Koo Yun-cheol to talk about deepening their countries' economic relationship. Their chat covered steps to make India and South Korea’s QR-based payment systems work together, a move that would make cross-border payments much easier and strengthen the economic ties between their people.
