India-EU Free Trade Agreement to Be ‘Game Changer’ for Trade and Tourism, Says German Ambassador

NEW DELHI — Speaking on the sidelines of The Travel Destination Germany Press Conference 2026 in the national capital, German Ambassador Philipp Ackermann declared that the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement will serve as a transformative game changer for bilateral commerce, foreign direct investment, and international travel between Delhi and Berlin. The high-level press conference was convened to promote Germany as a premier destination for Indian travellers, highlighting the growing synergy between economic policy and cross-border movement.   

Unlocking New Economic Pathways

The core objective of the landmark trade agreement lies in dismantling existing tariffs and regulatory barriers governing commerce between India and the European Union. Addressing questions regarding the economic impact of the deal, Ambassador Ackermann stressed that reducing these financial friction points will activate commercial channels and drive fresh investment opportunities across both markets.   

According to the Ambassador, the pact will encourage expanded German investment across various Indian business sectors while simultaneously opening new avenues for Indian capital throughout Germany. He noted that the lowering of trade tariffs serves as a dual catalyst, boosting industrial cooperation alongside mutual travel.   

The proposed India–EU Free Trade Agreement could be a game changer for trade, investment, tourism, and stronger India–Germany ties. 

Targeted Early Implementation Next Year

The timeline for establishing this economic framework is progressing rapidly. Ambassador Ackermann expressed strong optimism that official implementation of the free trade agreement is targeted for the first half of next year.   

Once implemented, the agreement is expected to generate sustained economic momentum across commercial sectors. The Ambassador noted that the coming years will witness a marked surge in business transactions, official travel, and reciprocal visitor numbers between the two partner nations.   

Evolving Preferences Among Indian Travellers

Beyond corporate investment, the prospective agreement coincides with notable shifts in bilateral tourism dynamics. Ambassador Ackermann pointed out that Indian leisure travellers have undergone a remarkable evolution over the past 15 years.   

Rather than following conventional sightseeing itineraries, modern Indian tourists increasingly prefer immersive nature excursions, outdoor trekking, and highly personalised travel experiences. Despite shifting global travel trends, Germany continues to record an upward trajectory in general tourism, bolstered by a steady rise in tourist arrivals from India. 

Diaspora Drives Deepening Connections

A key driver strengthening relations between the two countries is the expanding Indian diaspora living across German cities. Over 300,000 Indian nationals, including university students, skilled working professionals, and young families, currently reside in Germany.   

This vibrant community forms an active social and economic bridge, generating consistent travel through visits by family members and friends. Ambassador Ackermann highlighted that this growing human connection represents immense potential that remains far from exhausted, calling for more active promotional efforts across India.   

High-Value Benchmarks for Tourism Growth

Elaborating on specific tourism milestones, Romit Theophilus, Director of the German National Tourist Office, shared key target figures. Germany is aiming to secure over one million overnight stays by Indian visitors, which translates to just over 300,000 individual travellers.   

Data from the tourist office shows that Indian leisure travellers spend an average of nine nights per visit, generating expenditures exceeding 3,000 euros per trip. This equates to a daily spend of approximately 350 euros on accommodation, transport, and dining. To capture this market, Germany is launching thematic campaigns focused on city experiences, culinary tours, honeymoons, and destination weddings.
