Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Netherlands will give India and the Dutch government an opportunity to reset their engagement at the highest level after a gap of nine years, India’s Ambassador to the Netherlands Kumar Tuhin has underlined. Speaking in The Hague ahead of the visit, he described the trip as “significant for many reasons”, noting both the timing and the broader momentum in India’s ties with the Netherlands and the European Union.

Visit after nine years, second by PM Modi

Ambassador Tuhin pointed out that this will be Prime Minister Modi’s second visit to the Netherlands, and the first since 2017. The return to The Hague after nearly a decade, he suggested, reflects how the bilateral relationship has moved on “a remarkable, positive and upward trajectory”.

The envoy emphasised that the visit comes at a time when India’s relationship with the European Union is seeing “significant momentum”, particularly in the context of the India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The Netherlands, he noted in earlier public remarks, is one of India’s key European partners and a gateway for trade and investment flows into the continent.

Early engagement with new Dutch government

A second aspect the Ambassador highlighted is the timing of the visit in relation to domestic political developments in the Netherlands. He noted that the trip is taking place “very early in the tenure of the new government” in The Hague, led by Prime Minister Rob Jetten.

According to Tuhin, this creates an opportunity for the two leaders to “sit together, establish rapport, review the progress made and then give directions to both sides for taking our relations forward to a new level”. In his words, the visit will help “reaffirm the political commitment to the bilateral relationship with the Netherlands at the highest level” and identify new priority areas for cooperation.

India–Netherlands ties in the wider India–EU context

The Ambassador linked the significance of the visit to the broader trajectory of India–EU ties. With negotiations on an India–EU FTA politically concluded and other strands of cooperation advancing, he suggested that bilateral partnerships with member states such as the Netherlands gain added weight, especially in areas like technology, logistics, climate action and investment.

Public data and official briefings show that the Netherlands is among India’s major trading partners in Europe and one of its largest foreign investors, reinforcing its role as an important node in India’s European engagement. Modi’s meetings in the Netherlands are therefore expected to sit within a broader effort to align national partnerships with the evolving India–EU framework.

Opportunity to set priorities for the next phase

By framing the visit as both a chance to reaffirm commitment and to “chart out the new priority areas for cooperation”, Ambassador Tuhin has drawn attention to its agenda‑setting function. While specific sectors were not listed in the quoted remarks, his recent interviews have referenced areas such as new technologies, semiconductors, sustainable energy, trade and education as domains where both sides see scope for further progress.
