External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held a productive meeting today in New Delhi with the Netherlands’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, David van Weel, marking a significant step in deepening the bilateral partnership between the two nations. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in critical sectors such as defence, semiconductors, and clean energy, while also addressing broader frameworks for the India-EU Free Trade Agreement. The visit reinforces the strong diplomatic rapport established between the two leaderships, following the recent engagement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Dick Schoof in Johannesburg.

A key outcome of the dialogue was the exchange of a Letter of Intent on Defence Cooperation, signaling a mutual commitment to intensifying engagement in security and defence industrial collaboration. Both ministers underscored the importance of aligning efforts in high-technology domains. Dr. Jaishankar highlighted the emergence of new avenues for partnership, stating, "Whether it's semiconductors or digital or cyberspace or life sciences, we would like to work more closely with you." This sentiment was reciprocated by Minister van Weel, who emphasized the necessity for democracies to unite amidst shifting global geopolitics. He remarked, "Countries like us, which adhere to democracy, the international rule-based order, and free trade, need to stick together and intensify our cooperation to stand the test of time."

Advancing the India-EU Free Trade Agenda

The meeting also provided a platform to accelerate discussions regarding the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Dr. Jaishankar noted that negotiations are entering a critical juncture, expressing hope for continued support from the Netherlands. "We also count on your support as we are moving to what I hope is a decisive phase in our negotiations with the European Union on the Free Trade Agreement," he stated. Beyond trade, the leaders reaffirmed their dedication to existing strongholds of cooperation, including water management, agriculture, and health, ensuring that the bilateral relationship continues to deliver tangible benefits for both regions.
