India–Malta 4th Foreign Office Talks Focus on Trade, Tech & Maritime Ties

The 4th Round of India–Malta Foreign Office Consultations was held in Valletta on 27 March 2026. The discussion was co‑chaired by Secretary (West) in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Shri Sibi George, and Mr Christopher Cutajar, Permanent Secretary at Malta’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism. The meeting was held to review the full range of bilateral relations and identify priority areas for future co‑operation.

Review of bilateral co‑operation
According to the official account of India’s Ministry of External Affairs (@MEAIndia), “the consultations reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations with discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in trade & investment, ICT, healthcare, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, education, maritime sector, and people-to-people exchanges.”
The same update noted that both sides also examined prospects for enhancing economic engagement “in the context of the conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement,” situating bilateral discussions within the broader India–EU economic agenda.
India-Malta talks: Focus on emerging sectors
In a separate post, Mr. Christopher Cutajar (@chriscutajar) stated that he met Ambassador Sibi George in Malta for political consultations during the India–Malta talks, where they discussed strengthening bilateral ties, with a focus on artificial intelligence, maritime cooperation, and the pharmaceutical sector. He further indicated that the dialogue also covered regional and multilateral matters, underscoring the shared interest in maintaining regular political consultations alongside sectoral co‑operation.

Multilateral engagement and global issues
The update from @MEAIndia also stated that the two sides exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest and “reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation in multilateral fora,” reflecting India’s and Malta’s stated emphasis on constructive roles in international organisations.
Cultural engagements in Valletta
Public diplomacy and cultural outreach also formed part of the programme in Valletta. In a post by the High Commission of India in Malta (@IndiainMalta), “as part of the Foreign Office Consultations in Malta, Ambassador Sibi George visited Muza, the National Community Art Museum and the Upper Barrakka Gardens, along with Mr. Christopher Cutajar,” highlighting the cultural dimension of the visit alongside the formal consultations.
